Callista

A deep 52oz pile at 16mm — one of the taller, softer carpets Signature makes — in solution dyed nylon, so the colour goes right through the fibre rather than sitting on it. Twelve shades named after cloud and weather, and they behave like it: the palette is almost entirely neutral, running cream through greige to near-black with no strong colour anywhere.

Where it doesn’t suit

Solution dyed is the part worth paying for and the part nobody explains. Because the pigment is locked into the fibre rather than dyed onto the surface, it does not bleach — you can clean a spill hard, and sunlight through a west-facing window will not fade a stripe across the floor over five summers. That is a genuine advantage over a piece-dyed nylon at similar money. The trade-off with a 16mm pile is footprints and vacuum marks: a deep soft carpet shows every track, which some people love and some cannot live with. If that would bother you, the shorter Aviva pile is the better buy.
